No comprehensive program exists that teaches the unique combination of skills and knowledge required to be successful in investor relations. Those new to the investor relations (IR) function are often overwhelmed by the responsibilities and uncertain where to begin, and what questions to ask.

The first edition of this Guide to Developing an Investor Relations Program was commissioned by CIRI in 2001 to assist IR professionals in setting up and maintaining an effective IR program. The second edition was issued in 2005 and reflected changes to regulatory requirements, including new continuous disclosure and corporate governance disclosure obligations. This third edition reflects changes to regulatory requirements since 2005 and the evolution of IR practices and communications channels in the current environment.
